Australia has warned that GLP-1 drugs used for weight loss and Type 2 diabetes may cause a rare and serious eye disease. In the statement published by the Australian Medicinal Goods Administration (TGA), a warning was made about drugs used in the treatment of Type-2 diabetes and obesity. The warning stated that these drugs may cause a rare disease called "non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION)" and stated that "NAION can cause permanent visual impairment, including blindness, and there is no proven treatment to correct vision.
The warning emphasized that those using GLP-1 medication should stop using the medication and immediately consult a healthcare institution if they experience any vision loss. TGA stated that 36 NAION cases associated with GLP-1 drugs have been encountered to date. NAION is caused by a disorder in the blood flow to the optic nerve at the back of the eye and occurs suddenly, usually upon awakening, without pain, and can often be irreversible. GLP-1 drugs work by mimicking a hormone that helps control blood sugar levels and appetite and are used specifically to treat diabetes."
