Instagram Started Blocking Those Who Shoot Secret Videos with Meta Glasses

Instagram, the world's most popular social media platform, was constantly taking new measures regarding user security and inappropriate content. Now, the platform has made a move regarding the images recorded with Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, which have become increasingly common lately. Unfortunately, such glasses brought privacy concerns and caused people to have their images taken without their consent.

According to the latest information, Meta, the owner of the platform, has started to block Instagram users who secretly record people using their smart glasses and produce content with these images. Sanctions have started against users who shoot secret videos with meta glasses. "Pick-up videos", in which women are filmed without their knowledge, especially in public spaces, or "prank" contents that push the limits of restaurant and store employees have increased significantly on the platform. These videos, recorded without the consent of the users, led to the devices being referred to by the public with unfortunate nicknames such as "pervert glasses".

This situation posed a serious threat to both user safety and the commercial success and brand image of the product. Making a statement on the issue, Instagram President Adam Mosseri clearly stated the new sanctions in his post on the social media platform. Mosseri stated that content that exploits people and acts towards them in ways that amount to harassment will be removed from the platform as soon as it is detected.

Drawing attention to the frequently encountered street interviews or dating videos that disturb people, Mosseri emphasized that they do not want people to use the platform to secretly record and harass others. Although an exact number has not been shared regarding how many videos have been deleted within the scope of the new policy that has come into force, concrete steps have begun to be taken. An investigation by Business Insider found that two high-profile accounts that regularly recorded women in public without their consent were shut down.

Meta officials also officially confirmed that the accounts in question were blocked precisely because of the abusive content captured with smart glasses. Seeing that the problem is not limited to content alone, Meta continues to take some technical measures at the device level as well. The company recently released a software update that completely disables the camera if the LED light indicating recording is tampered with.
