Some students in Dunedin asked to self-isolate amid increase in winter illness

A spokesperson for Hato Hone St John confirmed they were called out to Heriot Row, North Dunedin on the afternoon of 22 July, and sent one ambulance.

"One person was assessed and treated at the scene and did not require transportation to hospital. A spokesperson for the University of Otago said the number of cases they were seeing was typical for this time of year. "Only students who are experiencing flu-like symptoms in our residential colleges (including Carrington) have been asked to self-isolate whenever possible.

The spokesperson said at this time of year they expected to see more students with cold and flu-like symptoms and had well-established systems in place. "This includes advising students and staff to stay home if they are feeling unwell and wear masks when in public, to practice good hygiene, and to avoid large gatherings. Student Health Services gave flu vaccinations, which were free for all Dunedin-based students and could be booked by phone or in person, they said.

"We have winter wellness advice for our students on the Student Health website and the Aonui student portal. Some students at Carrington College Dunedin have been asked to self-isolate amid an increase in winter illness, with one requiring the attention of an ambulance.
