Jeju Officer Arrested for Deleting Missing-person Records

A police officer in Jeju has been urgently arrested on suspicion of arbitrarily closing a missing-person case based on false information and deleting the record from the missing-person management system. The officer was also found to have falsely closed another missing-person case in a similar manner, exposing serious flaws in the police's handling and management of missing-person cases. The Jeju Provincial Police Agency announced on the 22nd that it had urgently arrested a police officer, identified only by the surname Gyeong, from the missing-person search team of the Jeju Western Police Station's criminal division, on charges of dereliction of duty, forging and using false electronic records, and obstructing official duties through deception. The officer is accused of receiving a missing-person report on May 15 from the cohabitant of Jang Mi-ran, 37, who had not returned home for three days, and then about two and a half hours later telling the reporter that contact had been made, that she was fine, and that she was reluctant to disclose her location, before closing the case.
