The steel crisis in Taranto, Italy, has its roots in decisions made nearly seventy years ago, when the Finsider technicians already knew that cold processing would be the only sustainable option, both economically and environmentally. However, political choices overrode their technical advice, setting the stage for the current dilemma facing the Italian consortium trying to save the former Ilva plant.
