Hungarian Prime Minister Magyar Péter has asked large companies and international corporations operating in Hungary to help fund the state ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 revolution and war of independence, scheduled for October 23. "We decided to turn to Hungarian companies. Our revolution is 70 years old; we will celebrate the 70th anniversary of October 23, 1956. We believe it would be fair and proper if not only taxpayers covered the commemoration of this wonderful holiday, but Hungarian companies, primarily large enterprises, or international corporations operating here also joined in the common celebration, Magyar said at a press conference in Paks on Sunday morning. "Let us create a tradition right away, so that the prime minister does not always have to point out that social responsibility exists, he added, citing as an example that companies are currently boasting about their contributions to the construction of the Danube riverbed sill.
As is known, construction of the sill has begun between Paks and Dunaszentbenedek due to the critically low, historically shallow water level of the Danube. In addition, two 80-meter barges have been prepared so that intervention can take place within days if the river level drops further. The barges are being built in front of the cold-water intake pipe of the Paks nuclear power plant.
Strabag and KÉSZ Zrt. are providing raw materials free of charge for the sill's construction, and several small companies have also offered help. After some prodding, Viktor Orbán's father also volunteered and offered stones.
