🇫🇷 FranceLe Mans' Marie-marvingt Stadium to Host First Ligue 1 Match Against Brest on Saturday in France
Le Mans' Marie-Marvingt Stadium, long considered France's first white elephant, will host its first Ligue 1 match on Saturday, August 22, when the local club faces Brest. The 25,000-seat venue, inaugurated in 2011, was quickly underused after the Sarthe club's judicial liquidation two years later. Located in the south of the city, at the heart of Le Mans' sports excellence hub, the stadium is surrounded by the Antarès Arena, home to the city's basketball team, and the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit, the world's most renowned endurance auto race.
It is the second-largest stadium in the region behind Nantes' La Beaujoire. Ten days before the match, the Virage Sud supporters' group headquarters was buzzing. On Wednesday, August 12, volunteers from the club's largest fan group, founded in 1985, distributed passes to members.
For the 2026-2027 season, 13,500 people have subscribed to the stadium, a record. During our years in the lower divisions, [the stadium] struggled to fill up, even though we had the second-best attendance in Ligue 2 last season, behind Saint-Étienne [with around 12,000 spectators on average per match], said Élodie Drouet, secretary of Virage Sud.
