Hastanesi After a Gasoline Canister Leaked on Their Balcony and Ignited When the Husband Entered With a Cigarette, Causing a Flash Fire

Naim Demirbaş, 49, a father of four from the Kağızman district of Kars, had returned home after watering his garden a week ago. He entered the house smoking a cigarette, unaware that gasoline from a canister he had stored on the enclosed balcony for his tiller had seeped onto the carpet, triggering the flash fire. During the blaze, Demirbaş's clothes caught fire.

He attempted to throw the canister outside to prevent further damage to the home, while his wife, Nezahat Demirbaş, rushed to help him and was also injured. Demirbaş sustained second- and third-degree burns on his face, head, arms, hands, and chest, while his wife suffered minor burns on various parts of her body. The couple was first treated at Kağızman Devlet Hastanesi before being transferred to the Burn Treatment Center at Erzurum Şehir Hastanesi, where they remain under care.

"The gasoline had leaked from the canister, and as I entered the house with a cigarette, a flash fire suddenly occurred, and I lost consciousness, Demirbaş said. "My wife also got burned while helping me. He added that he was burned more severely while throwing the canister out of the house, and urged others: "Let no one make a mistake like mine; never keep gasoline inside the house.

He noted the fire likely resulted from gasoline seeping into the carpet and ash falling from the cigarette. "When they arrived, they had second-degree burns.

His wife was slightly better, but Naim's burns were deeper. They have overcome the difficult period. We will reopen and examine the wounds, and if they are as expected, we will apply a special material and discharge them," he said.

Nohutçu also stressed the importance of proper first aid, warning: Pouring water on gasoline-related flame burns intensifies the flames, which is definitely wrong. The right approach is to cover the burned areas with a wet blanket or use a fire extinguisher.
