New Game Blends Japanese Lessons With Card Play in Ukiyo-e Style

Worlds Upon the Wind, a new game by Russian-Jordanian solo developer Max Shawabkeh, blends Japanese language learning with a digital card game, all set in an art style inspired by ukiyo-e and emaki (painted handscrolls). The game offers a nonviolent, deliberately paced, and meditative experience about rebuilding a world shattered into 10,000 pieces by an environmental apocalypse. Players begin as a disembodied, deity-like figure gazing at "shards" of the broken world floating among the clouds.
To restore the ruined world, they use a deck of cards bearing kanji characters, each inscribed with "essences" that enable building, exploring, or gathering resources. The game combines language learning, Japanese art, and a story of acceptance, creating a slow-burn gameplay experience that stands in contrast to typical big-budget blockbusters.
