Linkedin Says Its New Tool for Reporting Ai-generated Content, Colloquially Known As the "AI Slop" Button, Is Already Improving Feed Quality
The platform will now alert users when their posts have been flagged by others using the feature. Since the dedicated reporting tool launched a few weeks ago, it has been used more than a million times, according to LinkedIn Chief Product Officer Hari Srinivasan. In an update, he wrote that members are now seeing 40% fewer views on content the company classifies as AI slop compared to just a few weeks ago.
Srinivasan said LinkedIn uses "many signals" to determine a post's reach and has "built safeguards to help prevent individual feedback from being used to unfairly target other members. The company has previously adjusted its algorithm to reduce the reach of posts containing common AI phrasing, such as "it not X, it's Y. LinkedIn is also introducing a new notification that will alert users when a post they shared has been reported by others as seeming like AI slop. According to a screenshot shared by Srinivasan, the alert will appear in the app's "post analytics" feature.
While AI-generated content has become widespread across social media, LinkedIn has gained a reputation for being particularly saturated with it. A study by AI detection firm Pangram estimated that more than 40% of longform posts on the professional network were likely created by AI. The Microsoft-owned platform has at times encouraged users to take advantage of AI writing tools, introducing several LLM-powered features over the years, including a prominent button that allowed people to "enhance" posts and messages. LinkedIn removed that feature when it rolled out the AI slop reporting tool.
