Sittard, the Netherlands, Early Friday Morning After a "Suspicious Situation" Developed at the Scene

The shooting occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Stationsplein, directly in front of the police station. Police said in a statement that a "suspicious situation" had arisen, but a spokesperson declined to say what it involved. The 34-year-old man from Nijmegen was treated at the scene for his wound, then arrested and taken to a hospital.

Police have not disclosed what he is suspected of. Because the shooting involved police, the Dutch national investigation agency Rijksrecherche has opened an inquiry into the use of the weapon.
