Xfinity Shield Includes Different Security Modes to Enable or Disable Features Based on Activity

Comcast on Monday announced Xfinity Shield, a home-security platform that uses Xfinity Wi-Fi in new ways, including a feature called WiFi Motion that detects movement in the home without cameras or dedicated motion sensors. The technology is available at no additional cost to eligible Xfinity customers, though compatible equipment and other requirements apply. WiFi Motion works by using algorithms to monitor changes in Wi-Fi frequencies and identify small patterns of interference, such as those a person creates when entering a room.
This allows the system to detect human presence without traditional motion sensors, cameras, or video, preserving privacy while still sending alerts through the Xfinity app if unexpected movement is noticed. The feature requires an Xfinity Gateway device and at least one connected Wi-Fi device on the Xfinity platform. Similar presence-sensing technology has been used in standalone sensors, smart light bulb kits, and systems for aging-in-place arrangements in nursing homes, but this marks the first time it is offered as a free router upgrade.
Xfinity Shield includes different security modes to enable or disable features based on activity. Home Watch, Away Watch, and Dark Watch provide different approaches to alerts and arming systems depending on whether people are at home, at work or school, or sleeping. WiFi Motion does not have to stay on all the time. A representative from Xfinity did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
