A new study finds that global warming is delaying organized giant storms in tropical regions, making them far more destructive. Research using high-resolution climate models shows that rainy seasons could be delayed by up to 15 days, with accumulated energy potentially producing rainfall up to 45 percent more intense. The study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, examined "mesoscale convective systems" (MCS) — organized storm clusters spanning hundreds of kilometers and lasting for hours.
These systems generate more than half of all rainfall in tropical regions and are known as a primary source of sudden, deadly flash floods. Researchers from China and the United States developed advanced climate simulations that revealed how the seasonal cycle of these storm structures is fundamentally changing as the planet warms. According to the findings, a warming atmosphere has a greater capacity to trap energy, which slows global air circulation.
Because atmospheric balances are delayed, the rainy season begins 10 to 15 days later. However, as the season is postponed, energy stored in the atmosphere becomes more concentrated, and when storms finally arrive, they deliver roughly 38 to 45 percent more intense rainfall. This means the same amount of precipitation falls within a much narrower time window, at disaster-level intensity, rather than being spread over a longer period.
The timing of the rainy season in tropical regions directly determines agricultural planting and harvest calendars, the sustainability of water resources, and flood risks. Sudden, destructive storms could trigger flooding that threatens the lives of millions of people. Experts note that properly understanding this shift in storm dynamics serves as a critical warning for local governments and the agricultural sector adapting to changing climate conditions. The study was conducted with high-resolution climate models and published in Nature Geoscience.
