🇺🇸 United StatesNielsen Is Set to Implement a Major Overhaul of Its TV Measurement Methodology on Sept

Nielsen is set to implement a major overhaul of its TV measurement methodology on Sept. 1, pending Media Rating Council approval, introducing a new way to count total U.S. TV users, updated co-viewing metrics, and improved weighting of big data and panel components. While client data and publicly released numbers are unlikely to change significantly, Nielsen is touting a more accurate product.
The company had planned to incorporate the changes into its monthly Gauge report of viewing share for broadcast, cable, and streaming outlets in February, but client pushback led Nielsen to delay the rollout until the start of the 2026-27 season. The dispute centered on the inclusion of data from the Advertising Research Foundation's DASH TV Universe Study, which would have caused a one-time reset in viewing figures, with a slightly larger share for linear outlets (mostly benefiting cable) and a bit less for streaming platforms. The DASH survey data, collected by polling firm NORC at the University of Chicago, lagged by 12 to 18 months, but Nielsen says it has addressed that lag and will now incorporate more current data.
