India to Recognize Taliban in Due Time, Deepen Kabul Ties: Sources

India will officially recognize the Taliban government in Afghanistan "in due time" after gaining greater clarity on security and social issues, but will continue deepening diplomatic and economic engagement with Kabul in the meantime, given Afghanistan's strategic importance, sources said. "New Delhi is keen to build strong economic and diplomatic ties with Kabul, given India's longstanding relationship with Afghanistan as well as its strategic interests, particularly in the context of Afghanistan's growing differences with Pakistan and China's expanding influence in the region, a source tracking the matter told businessline. "While formal recognition of the Taliban regime is expected in due time, certain issues need to be addressed first, including adequate security assurances and greater clarity on inclusivity and humanitarian and social concerns. Minister of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at a briefing this week that historic ties between the peoples of Afghanistan and India have gained considerable momentum over the past year through diplomatic exchanges, humanitarian assistance and development cooperation programs.
