🇮🇷 IranIran Vows to Improve World Cup Prep After Group-stage Exit

Both teams failed to advance beyond the group stage at the 2026 World Cup, prompting Iran's football federation to promise better preparation.
Both teams failed to advance beyond the group stage at the 2026 World Cup. The Iranian Football Federation, criticized for not arranging friendlies against strong opponents before the World Cup, has vowed to improve its preparatory phase. Federation head Mehdi Taj said three matches have been organized for the first FIFA days: one against an Asian team that participated in the World Cup (most likely Uzbekistan), one against Russia, and a third, not yet fully confirmed, against a European team.
Taj explained that official announcements will be made jointly by the federation, the host country, and sponsors, and that the three matches will be held in three different countries—one in Asia and two in Europe. From Nov. 9 to 17, Iran will participate in a tournament in Iraq, playing two matches there.
Uzbekistan head coach Fabio Cannavaro has also confirmed negotiations are ongoing for the friendly with Iran. The match is part of Iran's broader strategy to face stronger opposition in the lead-up to the 2027 Asian Cup. During the first FIFA days, three matches have been organized for the national team, Taj said.
