South Korea's Health and Welfare Minister Jeong Eun-kyeong said the government will announce a plan to reform the basic pension scheme by late August or early September, with a structure that gives more money to low-income seniors. Speaking at a plenary session of the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee on Aug. 19, Jeong responded to a question from Rep.
Seo Young-seok of the Democratic Party of Korea about the pension reform. "The government is currently discussing various scenarios for reforming the basic pension, she said. "We plan to announce the reform plan by late August or early September. Jeong added that revising the Basic Pension Act would be required to implement the changes, noting that the plan would need to undergo parliamentary deliberation and public consultation.
