🇩🇪 GermanyThe German Farmers' Association (DBV), by Contrast, Is Demanding Immediate State Aid for the Affected Farms

Facing crop failures from drought and heat, the German Agricultural Society (DLG) is calling for more entrepreneurial freedom rather than subsidies. DLG President Paetow told Deutschlandfunk that agriculture must respond to changing conditions with innovation, arguing that subsidies are not a sustainable answer. The German Farmers' Association (DBV), by contrast, is demanding immediate state aid for the affected farms.
The two organizations are split over how to support the agricultural sector amid the ongoing dry conditions and heat waves that have damaged harvests across Germany. Paetow emphasized that farmers need the flexibility to adapt their operations to the new climate realities, suggesting that innovation and market-driven solutions would serve the industry better in the long term than government handouts. The DBV, however, insists that many farms are facing acute financial distress and cannot wait for long-term structural changes.
The debate comes as German agriculture grapples with the effects of climate change, with repeated dry summers and extreme temperatures reducing yields and threatening the livelihoods of farming communities nationwide. No specific figures on the extent of the crop losses were provided in the report.
