🇸🇪 SwedenSwedish MP Urges Minister to Halt Deportation of Elderly British Woman After 21 Years

Häkan Svenneling, an opposition MP for the Left Party representing Värmland, has written to Migration Minister Johan Forssell asking what he intends to do to stop the deportations of people who had lived in Sweden for decades. Svenneling's intervention comes amid the case of Joyce Thomas, a 78-year-old British widow who has been given four weeks to leave Sweden after 21 years of residency.
Thomas, a retired nurse who moved to Sweden with her late husband to be closer to their son and grandchildren, was told her appeal had failed over the removal order. She said: "I am in shock. An individual's life is at stake at my age.
I have done nothing wrong. Thomas made a late application to remain in Sweden in 2023, missing the deadline of 31 December 2021. She and her friends have said they repeatedly checked whether they needed to complete forms to remain in the country after Brexit and were told they did not. Thomas, who is self-sufficient and does not draw benefits from the Swedish state, has spoken of the "hell she is now in, facing separation from her family, friends, and her husband's grave.
