The ad in question read: "Do you miss Mogadishu? The repatriation grant helps you get home. Västtrafik said it decided to take down the ads due to risks to the work environment and potential vandalism.
"It is a risk to the work environment and for vandalism, and there we have a rule that says if such a risk exists, we stop that advertising, said Maria Björner Brauer, business area manager at Västtrafik, to P4 Skaraborg. In a written comment to SVT on Tuesday evening, Västtrafik said the issue involves a difficult balancing act, that advertisers must be treated equally, and that it cannot censor political messages. However, the ads must follow Västtrafik's rules.
We made a misjudgment when we approved these ads and did not see the risk to the work environment that later arose. When we received this information, we acted immediately and decided to take down the ads. Our drivers should of course be able to feel safe at work, said Mette Ramquist, press chief at Västtrafik.
Tobias Andersson, district chairman of the Sweden Democrats in Skaraborg, told P4 Skaraborg that Västtrafik is yielding to pressure and that the decision amounts to censorship. SVT's news must stand for factualness and impartiality, and what it publishes should be true and relevant.
