The U.S. Army is preparing a new field test for Hunter WOLF, an unmanned ground vehicle designed to carry heavy loads for soldiers and provide logistics support in difficult terrain. The robot vehicle, which can carry approximately 1.27 tons of cargo, will be tested on Aug. 20 at Fort Polk in Louisiana by the 82nd Airborne Division.
Soldiers will use the vehicle in scenarios similar to real operations, evaluating its performance in logistics, casualty evacuation, communications, and mobile power supply. Hunter WOLF was developed to carry loads in areas where soldiers must advance on foot and where conventional logistics vehicles struggle to reach. The vehicle can carry about 1,270 kilograms of cargo, allowing ammunition, communications equipment, batteries, and other heavy materials to be loaded onto the robot instead of being carried on soldiers' backs.
Its loading area is approximately 2.7 square meters. In terrain conditions, it can travel more than 321 kilometers on a single fuel refill, and with an additional fuel tank, its range can exceed 965 kilometers. One of Hunter WOLF's notable features is its hybrid-electric drive system, which allows the vehicle to move with lower noise when needed.
This is important for missions where engine noise could reveal the vehicle's position. The robot is not designed solely for cargo transport; its equipment can be changed according to the mission, and it can also be used to evacuate wounded soldiers, reducing the carrying burden on other troops during extraction from dangerous areas. For the new tests, the vehicle will be equipped with two tactical radios, five universal battery charging units, and a 15-kilowatt mobile power system, allowing Hunter WOLF to serve as a mobile power source for electronic equipment in the field.
Hunter WOLF was previously used in training with the 10th Mountain Division and the 101st Airborne Division. The new field exercise will assess how different units use the vehicle and in which tasks it is most effective. The U.S. Army has recently been testing unmanned ground vehicles more intensively to reduce logistics burdens behind the front lines and keep soldiers away from risky missions.
