Airtag Has Revealed That Amazon Is Behind Bulk Purchases of Rare Books That Are Being Destroyed After Their Pages Are Scanned to Train AI

The tech news outlet said it connected with a bookseller who agreed to plant an Airtag inside a rare book that was part of a bulk order. The tracking device was then traced to an Amazon AI training facility in Las Vegas, where a team was focused on tearing books from their spines and scanning the pages, 404 Media reported. For about a year, booksellers have suspected that AI firms were buying up large lots of rare books and destroying them after scanning, but this was hard to prove until now. The report also documented a logo on the door of the team's warehouse, called VGT3, showing a Tyrannosaurus rex preparing to devour a book — a detail that appears tone-deaf to the escalating backlash over destructive book scanning.
