Migration Tensions in the Sub-region Are Expected to Dominate the Agenda

South Africa is hosting the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit this year, having led the organization on an interim basis since late 2025 following Madagascar's withdrawal. Heads of state from the 16 member countries are meeting Monday, August 17, in Durban, on the country's east coast, for their ordinary summit. Migration tensions in the sub-region are expected to dominate the agenda. The meeting comes after anti-foreigner protests against undocumented immigrants swept through South Africa in June, followed by mass repatriations.
