HBO has released the viewership figures for the recently concluded third season of "House of the Dragon, revealing how the season, which arrived amid many questions, was received by audiences. The "Game of Thrones" prequel wrapped up its third season last week. There were concerns that the show could see a significant drop in viewership following the disappointing finale of season two.
However, that did not happen. "House of the Dragon" made an impressive start to its third season, and the latest numbers show the series maintained that performance in subsequent weeks. HBO announced that the season three finale reached 21 million viewers in its first three days.
This represents only a 2% decline compared to the season premiere. In other words, "House of the Dragon" managed to retain nearly all of its audience in its third season. Looking at the season as a whole, it also proved to be a success.
While season two averaged 35 million viewers per episode, season three largely maintained that level, with an average of 34 million viewers per episode. Set roughly 170 years before the events of "Game of Thrones, "House of the Dragon" focuses on the power struggle within House Targaryen, which rules Westeros, and the ensuing civil war. As dragons clash in this conflict, it plunges the entire realm into chaos, forcing other houses to choose sides.
