Fighter Jets Shot Down a Drone in Northeastern Latvia Overnight, the Latvian Public Broadcaster Reported.

An orange alert was sent by text message to residents in five districts in eastern Latvia at around 4 a.m. local time when the drone was detected. NATO fighter jets conducting air policing in Latvia shot down the drone in Balvi district, and the alert was lifted about an hour later. The Baltic Air Policing mission is carried out by air forces from several NATO countries that rotate on four-month deployments.

Turkey is currently conducting air policing in Estonia, and Italy is responsible for air policing in Lithuania. It is not yet known where the drone came from or who is responsible for it. This is not the first time drones have breached Latvian airspace.

French Air Force jets, then on air policing duty, shot down a drone for the first time on June 8, also in eastern Latvia. In the early hours of May 7, two drones crashed in eastern Latvia, and a third crashed and exploded near a lake.
