Giorgia Meloni, Is Facing a Challenge From Its Own Right Flank As Former General Roberto Vannacci's New Party Gains Traction in the Polls

Vannacci, who left the League party to found Futuro Nazionale (National Future, FN), is drawing far-right voters with increasingly radical identitarian positions. On September 4, after 1,413 consecutive days at the head of the Italian government, Meloni's executive will set an absolute record for longevity, surpassing the 68 governments that have succeeded each other since the Republic was founded in 1946 — a milestone the coalition is preparing to celebrate as a historic victory. However, with the campaign for the 2027 legislative elections already underway, Vannacci has emerged as a significant threat.

The former general shot to prominence in summer 2023 with the publication of a pamphlet, before being elected to the European Parliament by the League the following year. He has since broken away from Matteo Salvini's party and climbed rapidly in voting intentions. According to polling institute YouTrend, Vannacci now stands at 7%, surpassing both the League (far-right) and Forza Italia (conservatives).

His platform promotes an identitarian, masculinist vision and advocates differentiated treatment of foreigners on an ethnic basis. His rise in the polls is pushing forces within Meloni's coalition to harden their own positions in response.
