After years of successive drought, many South Australian farmers are optimistic this year is shaping up for bumper crops. Some properties have already exceeded their total rainfall for last year, with more falling last weekend. While confidence is strong, farmers still face crop losses from frost during the next several weeks of the growing season.

After successive years of devastating drought, South Australia's grain farmers say they are now experiencing some of the best conditions for growing crops in their lifetime. Some farms have already received more than double their total rainfall for 2024 and 2025, while further rain at the start of August has pushed optimism for a bumper harvest to new heights. While there are still several weeks left of the growing season and frost remains a risk, farmers say the potential for a big SA grain crop is "massive" after the past two dry years pushed many growers to the wall.

On parts of the state's Eyre Peninsula, some farmers have almost tripled last year's rainfall. Mr Williams says recent rain has "set us up for spring" – a most crucial time for crops.
