System Shock Remake Gets VR Version, Now Wishlistable on Steam

Nightdive Studios is bringing its acclaimed System Shock remake to virtual reality, with System Shock VR now available for wishlisting on Steam. The VR adaptation is being developed by Flat2VR Studios, though no release date has been announced yet. The original System Shock remake earned an 80% review score from PC Gamer and was named Best Remake of 2023 in the outlet's annual Game of the Year awards.

According to the Steam description, System Shock VR is a direct VR translation of the original game rather than a spinoff in the style of Half-Life: Alyx. Players take on the role of a hacker who was caught breaking into TriOp corporation, offered a deal by Edward Diego, and six months later finds themselves embroiled in the events aboard Citadel Station. VR adoption remains minimal, with Steam's Hardware and Software Survey reporting that well under 2% of Steam users own VR headsets.

While Meta Quest and PSVR2 headsets will also be supported, that still represents a tiny fraction of the overall gaming audience. Wolens points to Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow as a cautionary example.
