San Diego city officials have fined Marvel Studios $160,000 for an unauthorized promotional installation that covered a historic landmark during Comic-Con 2026, citing safety violations and permit breaches.
The massive installation transformed the iconic Gaslamp Quarter Arch, a six-ton landmark, into a Doctor Doom-themed green-and-black display in collaboration with advertising agency Elevue Outdoor. City authorities reacted strongly to what they called the unauthorized conversion of a public historic structure into an advertising billboard, which also endangered pedestrian safety. According to city officials, the contractor notified authorities one week before installation, but Code Enforcement and Building Inspection teams rejected the project over public safety and pedestrian access concerns.
Despite stop-work and removal orders issued after construction began, the display remained in place. The decorative Roman-style columns added around the arch's narrow pillars narrowed pedestrian space on Fifth Avenue, where thousands of comic book fans passed during the festival period.
