Lenovo Continues to Explore Foldable and Rollable Screen Technologies in Its Laptops

Lenovo's new ThinkBook model, codenamed Project Swan, has surfaced. The laptop will feature a rollable OLED display that expands horizontally rather than vertically, offering a larger workspace in a compact form factor. Following products like the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 and the Legion Go Fold Concept, the company is now working on Project Swan. According to information shared by Windows Latest, the device will use a rollable OLED panel. Unlike the previous ThinkBook Plus Gen 6, which expanded vertically, Project Swan's screen will widen horizontally.

Leaked images suggest the display will be nearly square when closed, and when opened, the viewing area is expected to approach a 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio. This design aims to provide a wider screen area on demand while maintaining standard laptop dimensions. It is not yet known whether Project Swan will remain a concept or go on sale commercially.

However, its positioning within the ThinkBook family confirms it will join the premium business laptop lineup. The leaked images also show two USB Type-C ports on the left side of the main body; no ports are visible on the right side, leaving other connectivity options unknown. The size of the USB Type-C connections suggests a very thin chassis.

While the horizontally expanding design has advantages, it may have an ergonomic drawback compared to Lenovo's previous rollable laptop. The ThinkBook Plus Gen 6's vertical expansion brought the top of the screen closer to eye level when used on a flat surface—an advantage Project Swan's horizontal layout will not offer. Lenovo is expected to bring rollable display technology to a different use case with Project Swan.
