Polish Officials Suspect Fugitive Politician Romanowski Is Under Russian Influence
Polish officials have reacted sharply to reports that a wanted former justice ministry official may be under the influence of Russian intelligence services.
The development has sparked sharp reactions from senior Polish officials, who suggested the politician may be under the influence of Russian intelligence services. Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk said on Thursday that he believes Romanowski is "with high probability under the influence of Russian services. His comments came after the letter's existence was confirmed by prosecutors.
Paweł Wojtunik, former head of Poland's Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA), wrote on social media that "it is impossible to enter there without the consent of the local KGB, adding, let alone live there. His remarks highlighted the difficulty of accessing the breakaway territory, which is not recognized internationally and is heavily dependent on Russia. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski also commented on the matter.
Their statements underscored growing concern in Warsaw over Romanowski's whereabouts and activities. Romanowski, who faces charges related to his time at the Justice Ministry, has been sought by Polish authorities.
