Writing on X, she said that since the birth of her daughter she cannot be "the best mother that my two young children deserve while also serving as press secretary, calling the dual role one of the most demanding jobs in the world. According to Leavitt, Trump has asked her to continue as a senior outside adviser, including as a voice for the MAGA movement.

A loyal MAGA supporter, she adopted a communication style similar to Trump's and frequently clashed with journalists. Before becoming press secretary, Leavitt served as Trump's campaign spokesperson in 2024. During his first term, she was an assistant press secretary under Kayleigh McEnany from 2019 to 2021. In 2022, she ran unsuccessfully for Congress. Trump had four press secretaries during his first term from 2017 to 2021; Sarah Huckabee Sanders held the role longest, from 2017 to 2019.
