🇦🇺 AustraliaVictorian Coroner Recommends Stronger Fire Safety Rules for Off-road Racing After Fatal 2022 Crash in Australia
A Victorian coroner is recommending stronger fire safety requirements for off-road racing events, after a fatal crash in 2022 that claimed the lives of two men.
Coroner Ingrid Giles found that Gerald Hoekstra, 46, and Ede Taric, 50, survived the initial crash but died when fire rapidly engulfed their vehicle during the Desert Enduro Race at Rainbow, about 400 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, on September 4, 2022. Mr Hoekstra lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree; the vehicle rolled, landed on its side, and was engulfed in flames. Ms Giles has provided three recommendations to further improve competitor safety in off-road racing events and prevent similar deaths from taking place.
