The Rhine's Low Water Level Has Been a Recurring Issue, Hampering the Transport of Goods by Ship in Germany

Low water levels on the Rhine are slowing down shipping traffic, and the German government is responding by easing Sunday driving bans for trucks. However, according to the economist Puls from the German Economic Institute (IW), this measure only creates new problems. The Rhine's low water level has been a recurring issue, hampering the transport of goods by ship.

To mitigate the impact, authorities have decided to relax the usual Sunday driving restrictions for lorries, allowing them to operate on Sundays to compensate for reduced shipping capacity. But IW economist Puls argues that this approach is counterproductive. He points out that there is already a significant shortage of truck drivers in Germany, with around 100,000 drivers missing.

Easing the driving bans does not address this fundamental problem and could instead lead to additional strain on the already overburdened logistics sector. Puls suggests that the measure might not bring the desired relief, as the lack of personnel remains a critical bottleneck.
