The ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in Lower Manhattan began with the tolling of bells and a moment of silence, followed by the reading of the names of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks. Family members and dignitaries gathered to honor the victims, with additional moments of silence planned to mark the times of the other attacks, including the second plane hitting the South Tower and the crashes at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
