Venezuela and Israel Agree to Restore Consular Relations
Venezuela and Israel have agreed to restore consular relations, marking a significant shift in ties between the two countries. The announcement came on Tuesday from both governments, as Venezuela's interim President Delcy Rodriguez pursues a major realignment following the U.S. military abduction of leader Nicolas Maduro in January.
Venezuela severed diplomatic ties with Israel 17 years ago over Israeli attacks on Gaza. Under Maduro, the country remained staunchly opposed to Israel while aligning with regional rival Iran. The decision to restore consular ties came after Israel deployed a team to Venezuela following twin earthquakes that devastated the South American nation. In a statement on X, Venezuela's Minister of Foreign Relations Felix Plasencia Gonzalez said both governments agreed to continue bilateral technical cooperation from the emergency and recovery efforts after the double earthquake, and to establish a coordination mechanism for consular services for their citizens residing in each country.
