Kabadayı, the Detained Mayor

The indictment was accepted by the Anatolia 27th Heavy Penal Court. Kabadayı, a member of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), was arrested on July 14 as part of a bribery investigation launched by the Istanbul Anatolia Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. He was taken into custody in Istanbul on July 10 along with four others, all of whom were subsequently arrested.
The mayor was suspended from duty on July 16. The investigation into Şile Municipality covers charges of "forming an organization for the purpose of committing crimes, "extortion, "bribery, and "tampering with public tenders. The indictment alleges that Kabadayı acted as the "leader of the organization" and seeks separate punishments for each of his alleged offenses, totaling between 33 years and three months and 92 years in prison.
