The Bundeswehr Needs Additional Barracks, Depots, and Training Grounds to Train New Recruits

Germany's Defense Ministry is moving forward with plans to reactivate five former military sites to accommodate the country's new conscription service, which took effect at the start of the year. The Bundeswehr needs additional barracks, depots, and training grounds to train new recruits. In July, the ministry identified eight former military properties as suitable; now, concrete steps are being initiated for five of them, according to a ministry press release.

The sites include the Kurpfalz-Kaserne in Speyer (Rhineland-Palatinate), the Unteroffizier-Krüger-Kaserne and its former training area in Kusel (Rhineland-Palatinate), the Graf-Stauffenberg-Kaserne and its former training area in Sigmaringen (Baden-Württemberg), the Kanaal-van-Wessem-Kaserne in Soest (North Rhine-Westphalia), and the Ray Barracks including the former US training ground Ockstadt in Friedberg (Hesse). Talks on future use have already taken place in Speyer, Kusel, and Sigmaringen, while discussions for Soest and Friedberg are still pending. The ministry stressed that these talks are not yet a decision on stationing troops at these locations.

Last year, the ministry ended civilian use of numerous former properties. The government is also preparing to reactivate civil service as part of a potential return to conscription.
