AI Era Overwhelms Peer Review As Studies Outpace Human Scrutiny

Peer review, the long-standing process by which researchers anonymously and voluntarily assess the validity of studies before publication, is struggling to keep up in the age of AI. Health economist Jason Semprini of Des Moines University experienced this firsthand when a reviewer misunderstood his study on HPV vaccine mandates, mistakenly believing he was questioning the vaccine's effectiveness against cervical cancer rather than examining the impact of a policy designed to boost vaccination rates. There's a very big difference there, Semprini said, noting that while HPV causes most cervical cancer cases, his research found mandates do little to reduce overall population rates, as they can motivate some people to avoid the vaccine. The incident highlights growing concerns about whether the overwhelmed peer review system can survive as AI tools reshape scientific publishing.
