Christopher Nolan's epic 'The Odyssey' stormed China's box office with $6.9 million from Imax-only previews ahead of its Friday release, while 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' held No. 1 for a second weekend. Sony's superhero sequel earned $28.9 million (RMB 196.6 million) over the Aug. 7-9 frame, pushing its 12-day local total to $185.4 million (RMB 1.26 billion).
The film launched in China with a record $121.3 million five-day haul, including $19 million from Imax — a format record for the market. It is now days away from surpassing the $199 million earned by 2019's 'Spider-Man: Far From Home, the last U.S. superhero release to clear $100 million in China. Nolan's 'The Odyssey' previews came ahead of its Friday debut, setting up a showdown with the Spider-Man sequel.
