School Uniforms Are Also Being Examined for Banned or Restricted Chemicals and Elements Such As Cords

Turkey's Trade Ministry has launched inspections of stationery and school products ahead of the 2026-2027 academic year, banning unsafe items from the market and imposing administrative penalties on manufacturers and importers. In a written statement, the ministry said inspections have been accelerated nationwide to protect students' health and safety as well as consumers' economic interests before the new school year begins on September 14. Products being checked include school bags, lunch boxes, pens, notebooks, erasers, scissors, pencil sharpeners, paints and adhesives. School uniforms are also being examined for banned or restricted chemicals and elements such as cords and drawstrings.

Items deemed dangerous or risky are sent to accredited laboratories for testing, while labels and consumer information texts are reviewed. Unsafe products will be banned from sale and recalled, with administrative fines applied to relevant manufacturers and importers. Information on unsafe products will be made available to consumers through the Unsafe Product Information System (GUBIS) at The ministry advised citizens to ensure stationery products carry the manufacturer's or importer's full name and address, brand and model details, and Turkish-language warnings.

For stationery items that double as toys, consumers should check age warnings and the CE mark. On children's clothing, readable Turkish content labels should be present alongside attention to risky elements like cords and drawstrings. Price label inspections are also being carried out extensively at chain markets, stationery shops and other retail outlets where school shopping is concentrated.

The ministry said it will continue inspections with determination to protect children's health and safety and prevent consumer grievances.
