Türkiye: Weapons, Ammunition, Vehicles, Equipment, Explosives, and Materials Brought or Declared by Members Would Be Registered

Turkey's parliament is set to debate a bill on Monday aimed at strengthening national solidarity and social cohesion, part of the government's "Terror-Free Turkey" initiative. The Grand National Assembly will convene at 11:00 AM to begin discussions on the proposal, which covers crimes related to the PKK/KCK terror organization, including establishing or leading the group, membership, knowingly providing assistance, and engaging in propaganda. The bill also addresses offenses committed within the scope of the organization's activities and those under the Law on Prevention of Financing of Terrorism.

Under the proposal, sentences for convicts serving up to 15 years for covered offenses would be suspended for five years, while those serving more than 15 years or life imprisonment would see their sentences suspended for ten years, subject to a judge's decision. Exceptions include those convicted of premeditated murder within the organization's activities and those sentenced to life or aggravated life imprisonment for crimes committed before June 1, 2005. The suspension would apply only after security institutions confirm the organization has ceased its active existence and surrendered all weapons and ammunition, with the National Security Council decision published in the Official Gazette. A board chaired by the Vice President and comprising the Justice, Foreign, Interior, and National Defense Ministers, along with the Presidential Secretary-General, MIT chief, and MGK Secretary-General, would oversee implementation. Weapons, ammunition, vehicles, equipment, explosives, and materials brought or declared by members would be registered.
