The Detroit Lions Have Reportedly Signed Their New Backup Quarterback for Jared Goff After the Previous Backup QB Retired

Earlier this year, the Detroit Lions signed quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to a one-year deal to play as Jared Goff's backup, but weeks later, it was revealed he was planning to retire. On Sunday, head coach Dan Campbell revealed that Bridgewater would be "stepping away" and would be "missed" as part of the team. It wasn't long after that that news arrived regarding the Lions' new backup quarterback, Josh Dobbs.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported (via sources) that Dobbs was signing a one-year, $1.425 million deal with $475k fully guaranteed. Dobbs spent last season as a backup for Drake Maye on the New England Patriots amid their run to the Super Bowl. Due to Maye's excellence on the field, Dobbs had limited appearances, playing in four games and compiling 65 yards on seven completions.

Garafolo also reported that the Lions worked out two other quarterbacks, former New Orleans Saints QB Jake Haener and UFL MVP Jack Plummer, but they ended up going with Dobbs as their choice to back up Goff. Dobbs saw the most action on the field in 2023, as he played in 13 games.

That season, he began with the Cardinals, played eight games, and was 1-7 as a starter. He threw for 1,569 passing yards and eight touchdowns in those eight games, with five interceptions. He was traded to the Minnesota Vikings in October 2023 after their starting quarterback, Kirk Cousins, suffered a season-ending Achilles injury.

He started four of five games for Minnesota and was 2-2 in those starts. Since then, Dobbs has had brief stints as a backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers and Patriots.
