Tate Brothers Seek Bail in Miami While Fighting Extradition to UK

In a new court filing, attorneys for the dual U.S.-British citizens argued that the former kickboxers are too famous to flee, citing their extraordinary public visibility. Defense lawyers requested that U.S. Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis grant bail on condition that the brothers surrender their passports and wear electronic monitoring devices. The Tates were arrested in Miami on July 18 after Britain's Crown Prosecution Service announced new charges involving four alleged victims between 2010 and 2017. Both men deny all wrongdoing.

Federal prosecutors in Miami, who previously argued the brothers pose a flight risk and a danger to the community, must respond to the bail request by Aug. 10. Judge Louis has set a hearing on their potential release for Aug. 13, while Britain has until Sept.

16 to submit its full extradition request to the State Department. The case has drawn political attention: last month, Democratic Rep. Yassamin Ansari said she wanted President Donald Trump's son Barron Trump to testify to the House Oversight Committee about whether he knew about or had any involvement in Tate's crimes. Barron has not been formally accused of wrongdoing.
