Indrek Aru, head of the Police and Border Guard Board's (PPA) North Prefecture border guard bureau, said that in the past two weeks police have caught 99 people who are believed to have no legal basis for staying in Estonia. On Thursday and Friday, Estonian police did not detect any new cases involving illegal immigrants. However, Aru said the migration pressure is not expected to end in the coming days.

Police conduct daily checks on roads entering the country, as well as at Tallinn Airport and major ports. Aru said that on 4 August police caught around ten people in central Tallinn who had no grounds to be in the country. They were from Somalia.

He said that disagreements arise easily in the detention facility where the illegal immigrants are currently held. "In the past couple of weeks, there have already been quite a few conflicts, Aru added. So far, police have managed to resolve them with little difficulty.

There have been cases where police have been threatened. Generally, however, the conflicts in the detention facility are everyday disputes. "For example, people bump into each other in the food line, leading to scuffles and pushing, Aru said.

There have also been misunderstandings when someone has eaten another detainee's food. In some cases, it is possible to send a person back to the country they came from within 48 hours. In other cases, the process can take several years. On average, police receive five to ten calls per day from citizens regarding illegal immigrants.
