A Visitor in Pavana Seeks the Spirit of Guccini

Locals immediately spot the outsider: You're here for Guccini. Yes, I am — though he's out today, and my meeting is set for tomorrow morning. I wanted to get a feel for Pavana, a place I'd never seen but which has always stood at the heart of Guccini's songs and books, even when they were about other things, like fields.
"Lei è qui per Guccini" they say, and I nod, confirming their guess. The village clings to the Apennine slopes, its stone houses and narrow streets echoing the lyrics I've known for years. I walk slowly, absorbing the light and the silence, imagining the young Guccini wandering these same paths.
Tomorrow, I'll meet him, but today is for this place — the real protagonist of his stories. As dusk falls, I sit on a low wall, watching the shadows lengthen, and I understand why he wrote so often of returning here. The air smells of woodsmoke and damp earth, and I feel a quiet thrill: I am in Pavana, and Guccini is here in every stone.
