Billions of dollars in Iranian funds pass through temporary accounts at American banks each year, despite US sanctions that bar US-regulated individuals and entities from nearly all financial activity linked to Tehran, according to Western officials and researchers who spoke to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). Iran gains indirect access to the US financial system through foreign banks that maintain with American institutions, the WSJ reported.
