The match lasted 4 hours and 29 minutes.
The match lasted 4 hours and 29 minutes. Van de Zandschulp (ATP-70) had already impressed in the previous round by eliminating world No. 6 Alex de Minaur. He will now face Frenchman Arthur Gea, who beat American Michael Zheng in five sets.
The 21-year-old Gea had little success in professional tennis until this year, but surprisingly won the ATP tournament in Los Cabos in early August. The world No. 82 then entered the US Open as a lucky loser after Casper Ruud withdrew, and went on to win his three matches. He is only the second male lucky loser ever to reach the quarterfinals at the US Open.
Van de Zandschulp is the only Dutch player still active in singles at the tournament. Among the men, Jesper de Jong was eliminated in the second round, while Tallon Griekspoor was knocked out in the first round. In the women's draw, Arantxa Rus and Anouk Koevermans lost their first-round matches. In women's doubles, Demi Schuurs and her partner Ellen Perez advanced to the third round by beating the Russian/Chinese duo of Elena Pridankina and Qianhui Tang (6-2, 6-7, 6-3).
