NHRC Issues Notices to MP Government, Police Over Alleged Assault on Dalit Student
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Madhya Pradesh government and police over an alleged assault on a Dalit student by a teacher.
The incident occurred on July 28 in Ukawal village, where a class 4 boy was reportedly beaten and subjected to casteist slurs after the teacher saw him drinking water from his bottle. The NHRC, taking suo motu cognisance of a media report, has sought a detailed report from the state chief secretary and Shivpuri's superintendent of police within two weeks, including the status of statutory relief for the victim. In a separate case, the NHRC has also issued a notice to Haryana's chief secretary over the death of a 12-year-old girl from jaundice allegedly caused by contaminated drinking water in Shahzadpur, Ambala district.
The girl died at PGIMER, Chandigarh, after her condition worsened. The commission has asked for a report on the health of other affected children and steps taken by the administration.
