US President Sues Over Edited Speech in 2024 Panorama Episode

The US president is suing the BBC over a 2024 Panorama episode that edited together two sections of a speech he gave before the 2021 Capitol riots. The BBC had requested Trump's financial records to assess his claim that the documentary damaged his business interests. A judge initially granted that request in July, with documents due Thursday, but another judge has now paused the disclosure after an emergency motion from Trump's lawyers, who argued it would cause "irreparable harm" until the court rules on an objection.
Trump has also sought to amend his complaint to drop claims that the documentary harmed his brands and businesses, instead seeking damages for "reputational injury to the President, full stop. The BBC called the delay request "a transparent effort to evade this court's clear and direct order, noting Trump's months-long refusal to provide documents and that the documentary never aired in the US. The lawsuit, filed in Florida, accuses the BBC of "intentionally, maliciously, and deceptively doctoring" the speech. The BBC has apologized for an editing error but seeks dismissal, arguing the programme doesn't meet defamation criteria and wasn't available on US platforms.
